Nursing & Midwifery Empowerment Project

Catholic Health Australia and Health Super, in partnership, will conduct a study into how patient care in hospitals and aged care services can be improved by providing Nurse/Midwifery Unit Managers with better support and training. The Catholic Health Australia Nursing and Midwifery Empowerment Project will explore a range of support options such as new work processes, workplace education and training, and senior staff mentoring.

The N/MUM project will utilise aspects of the same methodology of NSW Health in their 'take the lead' project conducted last year.  In that project NSW Health were aiming to facilitate the role of the N/MUM in order to provide highly coordinated care at the unit level and thereby improve the patient journey and the patient and carer experiences.

There are two components to the CHA project. Phase 1 was an on-line survey, where all N/MUMs across CHA were asked to participate. The survey collected mainly demographic information, level of education, and experience in management and identified what the barriers and enablers are in assisting nurses to carry out their roles.

Phase 2 was a series of focus groups held in May in Brisbane, Sydney, Melbourne and Perth.  The focus groups were small gatherings but were well attended.  N/MUMs articulated barriers and enablers that hinder and assist them in their positions.

Preparation of the final report on project findings, including the write up of project outcomes, detailing survey results, focus group outcomes and suggested strategies will be completed by the Royal College of Nursing, Australia.  The confidential draft report will go to the Stewardship Board for endorsement prior to release back to DONs, and discussion at the CHA Annual Conference.

Our aim is to empower Nurse Unit Managers to achieve optimum levels of patient care in hospitals and aged care services. But to do this, we need to understand the everyday concerns and needs of Nurse Unit Managers and how they can be better supported through education and training,” - MARTIN LAVERTY, CEO, CHA

This study is an important first step in understanding some of the core issues that Australian Nurse Unit Managers face every day. We are proud to support nurses in this way and anticipate that the research will lead to improvements in nursing care at every level.” - CAROL MCKELSON-TIMMONS, COO, HEALTH SUPER
